Kletturinn Latur hefur oft verið notaður sem hraðamælir. „Var talað um að róa Lat fyrir Geitafell og slögin talin í hvert eitt sinn, frá því að Geitafell fór að hverfa bak við Lat þar til það sást allt hinum megin“ (Árbók Ferðafélagsins 2003, bls. 91).
Þó er ekki útilokað að nafnið eigi við um „letilegan“ dvalarstað á langri leið því við Lat liggur gömul gata og neðan hans er gamalt sæluhús í hraunskjóli.
Gamlar sagnir eru til um að steinninn Latur hafi verið álfabústaður og mun það sérstaklega hafa verið á vitorði manna er bjuggu í Fífuhvammslandi. Eitt sinn gerðist það að börn, sem voru á ferð við steininn, sáu huldukonu þar á sveimi en er hún varð þeirra vör hvarf hún þeim sjónum við steininn.“
