Í Krýsuvík er þyrping sprengigíga. Allir eru þeir líklega yfir 6000 ára, þekktastir eru Grænavatn og Gestsstaðavatn. Í þyrpingunni eru a.m.k. fjórar gígaraðir, þrjár liggja norður-suður og ein NA-SV. Sú vestasta og elsta hefur aðallega gosið gjalli (Gestsstaðavatn) en hinar grjótmylsnu með stórgrýti í bland (Grænavatn) auk gjalls sú austasta (vikið austast í Grænavatni).
Sprengigígarnir raða sér í stefnu skjálftasprungna. Hraunmagn í gosunum hefur verið mjög lítið, þeim fylgdi mikið magn gabbróhnyðlinga og gossprungurnar voru stuttar. Því er líkast að gengið hafi yfir skjálftatímabil sem kom hreyfingu á storknandi kvikumassa í rótum megineldstöðvar Krýsuvíkurkerfisins.
In Krýsuvík there is a cluster of explosive craters. All of them are probably over 6000 years old, the best known are Grænavatn and Gestsstaðavatn. In the cluster there are at least four rows of craters, three lying north-south and one NA-SW. The westernmost and oldest has mainly erupted slag (Gestsstaðavatn) but the rock crumbs with boulders mixed (Grænavatn) as well as slag the easternmost (the easternmost point in Grænavatn).
The craters are arranged in the direction of seismic cracks. The amount of lava in the eruptions has been very small, they were accompanied by a large amount of gabbro nodules and the eruption fissures were short. It is therefore probable that there was an earthquake period that caused the movement of solidifying magma masses in the roots of the main volcano of the Krýsuvík system.
