Grænavatn (Greenlake) er eldgígur sem fékk nafn sitt af óvenjulegum grænum lit. Liturinn er vegna mikils brennisteins í vatninu og dýpt þess. Vatnið er aðeins um nokkur hundruð metrar í þvermál. Þó vatnið sé lítið er það þó nokkuð djúpt eða 45 metrar. Þetta er sýnilegt þegar þú stendur við brúnina og þú getur séð hvernig liturinn breytist við strandlengjuna þar sem vatnið dýpkar. Grænavatn er talið af jarðfræðingum eitt athyglisverðasta jarðfræðifyrirbæri sinnar tegundar á Íslandi. Talið era ð gígurinn sé um 6.000 ára gamall.

Vegna óvenjulegs eðlis og litar hefur vatnið verið uppspretta þjóðsagnasagna í aldanna rás. Aðeins nýlega um miðja 16. öld sást til undarlegrar veru koma upp úr vatninu.

Grænavatn (Greenlake) lake is a volcanic crater that got its name from its unusual green color. The color is due to a high level of sulphur in the water and its depth.  The lake is only about few hundred meters in diameter.  For a small lake it is quite deep, though, or 45 meters.  This is visible as you stand by the brim, and you can see how the color changes by the shoreline where the lake gets deeper. Grænavatn is considered by geologists to be one of the most noteworthy geological phenomena of its kind in Iceland.
