Vatn eykur rúmmál sitt þegar það frýs.
Það er fátítt um efni að þau auki rúmmálið við það að fara frá vökvaformi yfir í fast efni, og þetta telst meðal sérkennilegustu eiginleika vatns. Rúmmálsaukningin er nálægt 10%. Þegar vatnið frýs gefur það eftir hluta þessa eðlisvarma út í umhverfið. Niðurstaðan er myndun frostbylgju á mótum vatns í vökvaformi og vatns í föstu formi. Hægt og rólega safnast vatn utan á stráið sem frýs nær samstundis og eykst því umfang þess.
Water increases its volume when it freezes.
Materials rarely increase in volume from liquid to solid, and this is one of the most peculiar properties of water. The increase in volume is close to 10%. When water freezes, it releases some of this specific heat into the environment. The result is the formation of a freezing wave at the junction of liquid water and solid water. Slowly, water accumulates on the outside of the straw, which freezes almost immediately, thus increasing its extent.
