What’s In My Camera Bag Right now?

One of the things that changes when you get older, the toys get more expensive.

I’m often asked “What do you shoot with?” and what gear are you taking with you on the location?

First it’s important to understand what kind of photos I shoot and what effect that has on what I carry with me. I’m a Landscape and Nature Documentary Photographer so my gear is related to that purpose.

When I entered the Professional photography world and started to document Iceland I was determined to travel light, well now I hike the Highlands and Low lands with minimum 11.1 kg on my back and if that’s what it takes to get my photographic emotions to the sensor, so be it.

Photography is all about the art of creating photographic emotions. Without the right gear you might miss that phenomenal moment or fail to capture it at all as the light or the moment is gone.

Every year, the camera bag seems to change, new lenses, upgraded bodies and so on. it’s an ever evolving set of gear. I have three different camera bags for different purposes. I will start on the bag that is always ready and I grab with me for every day purpose. That is if I’m just going to pop out for a short period of time near my home, (when I’m hiking I sometimes change the content) or if I want to travel light. Ha ha ha ha. Yes I said” travel light”.

Let’s dig into it.

The Bag

The bag I use is a “Lowepro ProTactic 350 AW”

It’s a fantastic camera backpack for its purpose. It offers flexible adaptive interior, multiple access points which I use to hang my GoPro, Cell Phone and other stuff. It has a convertible utility belt and includes utility pouch, water bottle holder, tripod cup and two Quick Straps. ActivZone back panel gives targeted comfort and support while All Weather AW Cover protects gear from rain, snow which is important in Iceland.

Main Camera

My main camera is Canon EOS 5D MK IV

The Canon 5D Mark IV is the world’s most universal DSLR. It is competitive for sports and action as well as for wedding, nature, portrait, landscape and product photography. With 30 full-frame megapixels, it’s also state of the art in resolution. The only camera with significantly more resolution than this 5D Mk IV is Canon’s 5DS and 5DSR, which are essentially a higher resolution but slower version of this 5D Mk IV.
What made me upgrade from MK II to MK IV was the built in GPS witch also tags the elevation, the WiFi, Touch Screen, the Autofocus and other great stuff.

Main Lenses

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L ll USM

This is the other lens that I´m constantly changing with the Tamron. This is a high performance, water-resistant, and ultra wide-angle Canon L-series lens and it has been specifically designed for improved edge-to-edge image quality that will meet the strict requirements of professional photographers.
I really love this wide angle lens and together with the Tamron I have the spectrum I want.

TAMRON SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD

This lens is one of my favorite lens (hmmm all my lenses are my favorite) and I’m using it in all occasions, that is where I want to use it
The Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is distinguished by being the first fast standard zoom for full frame cameras to include optical image stabilization. The fact that it does so in a design that includes a ring-type ultrasonic motor for fast, silent autofocus and a degree of weather sealing all at a significantly lower price than Canon’s non-stabilized EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM that was announced around the same time, might lead you to think suspect must be some serious compromise involved in its design. But there isn’t.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM

This lens is always with me. It is a great workhorse telephoto zoom lens designed for professional use. It has a rugged durable design, a four-stop Image Stabilizer and specialized lens elements.
The L-series is Canon’s flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling. The four-stop Image Stabilizer (IS) makes it ideal for shooting in low light conditions when using a tripod is not possible. The IS system allows shutter speeds up to four stops slower than normal to be used without causing image blur. The lens features elements made from fluorite, which reduce chromatic aberration. Five UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements are used to ensure high contrast and natural color reproduction throughout the zoom range. I just Love this lens.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens

This is an excellent macro lens – and may be Canon’s most fun per dollar lens. This is the lens I most frequently recommend for someone starting out in macro photography – at least most frequently recommend until the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens was introduced. The 100 macro is a medium-small lens and is rather light in weight. This is a very comfortable-to-carry-and-use lens. Build quality is decent but not as solid as Canon’s L Series lenses. It serves my need for Macro photography very well.

FIlters

I am using filters because often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don’t have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed.
I’m using Graduated Neutral Density Soft Filters 0,3 – 0,6 – 0,9 – 1,2
Stop filters 0,3 – 0,6 – 0,9.
Reverse grad 0,9 and some colored Graduated filters as well

Tripod

Manfrotto BeFree Compact Travel Carbon Fiber Tripod which is only 4 kg and goes up to 144 cm.
I changed the Ball Head for more robust one so it could hold my EF 70 – 200 Lens.
What I like about this Tripod is the Flip Lock for the legs so you are very fast to open and close it. I’m really not fond of the screwing type as there seems to be constant trouble with open it and closing it and it take far too long time.

Datacolor SpyderCHECKR

Color Chart and Calibration Tool
The SpyderCHECKR from Datacolor is a color target for use with digital cameras. It features 48 swatches, including various shades of gray and skin tones. I use the swatches to perform a custom white balance on my camera, ensuring that my camera settings correctly match the lighting

Memory cards – Battery

I have lot of UDMA 7 Compact Flash Memory cards with me all the time as I don’t want to be out of space.
The same thing goes for Batteries. Never ever forget batteries and the Battery Charger for the car

Remote shutter

I usually don’t like to use remote shutter, especially not with cable as it takes to much wind and can cause vibrate to the camera. I try to use the 2 sec timer built in the camera but if that is not possible I bought Hahnel Combi TF wireless remote shutter release witch is working fine.

ROCKTRAIL knive

Oooooh I would not want to be without my multipurpose Pliers, Knives, Screwdrivers, saw and other things which are inside this masterpiece of tool. There are many times it has saved my trip as a tool to fasten things or whatever.

If you don’t have one – get yourself one.

GoPro

I keep the GoPro always with me as I sometimes like to get a quick video of something. Well we never know. It’s much safer to shoot under water with the GoPro than the Canon.

Lens cleaning cloth

I like to use MagicFiber for my lenses and they seem to work rather well.
Don’t forget to wipe your lens regularly.
It is nothing more frustrated then dirty shots, too much work afterwards.

You probably noticed that I don’t have second camera with me in this bag. Well there is no space for it and as I mentioned earlier I’m trying to travel LITE (ha ha ha ha). In my bag no. 2 I have it and also it is in my car as well as bigger tripods.

As a Landscape and nature Documentary photographer I DON’T USE FLASH so I don’t take it with me, but I’m using it in my Studio together with other Studio lights.
