Skálafell hefur hlaðist upp í nokkrum gosum á gossprungum og aldursmunur á þeim er mikill. Toppgígurinn í því er klepragígur af eldborgargerð. Hann varð til í því yngsta, líklega fyrir rúmum 3000 árum. Kringum toppgíginn eru jarðföll (skálarnar?) þar sem runnið hefur undan. Af þeim toga er einnig smáhellir suður úr toppgígnum.

Elstu hraunlögin úr Skálafelli eru yfir 8000 ára, og sjást í misgengisstalli austan við fellið og í sjávarklettum (Krossvíkurberg).
