Flestar glæsilegri náttúrulegu jarðhitalaugarnar á Íslandi eru uppi á hálendinu. Á stöðum sem eru afskekktir og erfitt að nálgast nema þú sért tilbúinn í langan akstur og langa gönguferð. Þetta eru staðir þar sem sjóðandi heitar jarðhitalindir mæta köldum lækjum, stundum eru uppsprettur lindanna hlið við hlið eins og í þessu tilfelli. Stundum blandast lindirnar saman og mynda náttúrulega laug fyllta með volgu vatni í miðri auðninni. Einn af þessum merkilegu stöðum er Strútslaug. Uppruni nafnsins er ráðgáta þar sem enginn strútur er á Íslandi og hefur aldrei verið.
Strútslaug (einnig þekkt sem Hólmsárbotnalaug) er jarðhitalaug á Suðurhálendinu, norður af Mýrdalsjökli og nálægt Torfajökli.
Strútslaug er ein afskekktasta jarðhitalaugin sem er aðgengileg á Íslandi. Hún er staðsett djúpt á hálendinu og þarf að aka nokkrar klukkustundir á öflugum og vel útbúnum 4X4 jeppa til þess að komast vel áleiðis. Hún er staðsett nálægt hálendisveginum Syðri Fjallabaki sem er oft erfið yfirferða. Gönguleiðin að sundlauginni tekur um það bil tvo tíma.
Stærð laugarinnar er um það bil 8,5 x 5 metrar, með mesta dýpi um 50 cm
Most of the more impressive natural geothermal pools in Iceland are in the highland. In places that are remote and difficult to visit unless you are prepared to take a long drive and a long hike. These are places where boiling hot geothermal springs meet cold creeks, sometimes the origin of the water is side by side. Sometimes the pair of springs, hot and cold, blend and form a natural pound filled with warm water in the middle of nowhere. One of those remarkable places is Strútslaug or the Ostrich pool. The origins of the name is a mystery as there are no Ostrich in Iceland and have never been.
Strutslaug (also known as Hólmsárbotnalaug) is a geothermal pool in the South Highlands, north of Myrdalsjokull glacier and close to Torfajokull glacier volcano.
Strútslaug is one of the most remote geothermal pools that are accessible in Iceland. It is located deep in the highland and requires few hours drive in a robust and well equipped 4X4 vehicle. It is placed near the Highland road Syðri Fjallabak that ‘s hard to drive and access. The hike to the pool takes about two hours.
The pool is located at the side of a cold water river and split in two parts by a wall of natural stone. Its size is about 8,5 x 5 meters, with a maximum depth of about 50 cm
