Vatnajökull (fyrrum nefndur Klofajökull) er þíðjökull staðsettur á suðausturhluta Íslands innan Vatnajökulsþjóðgarðs. Hann er stærsti jökull landsins bæði að flatarmáli og rúmmáli og þriðji stærsti jökull Evrópu að flatarmáli. Hæð jökulsins er yfirleitt 1.400 til 1.800 metrar yfir sjávarmáli.

Flatarmál Vatnajökuls mældist 7700km² árið 2017 og er hann um 3000 km3. Meðalþykkt hans er um 400 metrar en mesta þykkt hans er allt að einum kílómetra. Vatnajökull er stærstur jökla Evrópu utan heimskautasvæðanna. Út frá Vatnajökli ganga um það bil 30 skriðjöklar.

Undir Vatnajökli eru einhverjar mestu eldstöðvar landsins, Grímsvötn er þeirra þekktust ásamt Öræfajökli. Einnig má nefna Gjálp og Þórðarhyrnu og Bárðarbungu. Gos úr Vatnajökli hafa komið í hrinum í tímans rás og telja jarðvísindamenn að slík goshrina hefjist í náinni framtíð. Gætu þá gos í Vatnajökli orðið mjög tíð næstu hálfa öldina eða rúmlega það
