Lýðveldið Filippseyjar (tagalog Repúbliká ng̃ Pilipinas), er ríki í Suðaustur-Asíu og fimmta stærsta eyríki heims. Eyjaklasinn samanstendur af 7 641 eyjum og er fjarlægðin frá meginlandi Asíu 1.210 km. Filippseyjar fengu sjálfstæði frá Bandaríkjunum árið 1946 eftir að hafa verið hernumdar af Japönum í heimstyrjöldinni síðari.

Elstu mannvistarleifar á Filippseyjum hafa verið aldursgreindar upp á 1,7 milljónir ára og tilheyra fornaldarmanninum homo erectus. Elstu merki um nútímamanninn í landinu eru 67 þúsund ára gömul. Ekki er vitað hvaðan hann kom. En elstu ættbálkar Filippseyja komu til eyjaklasans fyrir um 40 þúsund árum. Þeir kallast negritos en talið er að hinn þekkti forni ættbálkur aeta sé af honum kominn. Báðir þessir ættbálkar eru orðnir mjög fámennir á Filippseyjum. Fyrir um 6000 til 2.500 árum f.Kr. fluttist fólk aftur í stórum stíl til eyjanna. Þetta voru ættbálkar malaio-pólýnesa, sem einnig settust að á Kyrrahafseyjum. Fólk þetta kom með tungumál til Filippseyja en talið er að nær öll tungumál eyjanna séu upprunnin frá þessum ættbálkum

The Philippines, officially the Republic of the Philippines is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. It is situated in the western Pacific Ocean, and consists of about 7,640 islands, that are broadly categorized under three main geographical divisions from north to south: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The Philippines is bounded by the South China Sea to the west, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Celebes Sea to the southwest, and shares maritime borders with Taiwan to the north, Japan to the northeast, Palau to the east and southeast, Indonesia to the south, Malaysia and Brunei to the southwest, Vietnam to the west, and China to the northwest. The Philippines covers an area of 300,000 km2 (120,000 sq mi), with a population of around 109 million people, making it the world’s twelfth-most populous country. The Philippines is a multinational state, with diverse ethnicities and cultures throughout its islands. Manila is the nation’s capital, while the largest city is Quezon City, both lying within the urban area of Metro Manila.
